Şerif Gören

Şerif Gören began his career as a film editor before stepping into directing, quickly becoming one of the most influential figures in Turkish cinema. Born in 1944 in Xanthi, Greece, Gören moved to Turkey in 1956 and completed his education at Istanbul High School for Boys. During the 1970s and 1980s, the golden era of Turkish cinema, he tackled a wide range of themes—from the struggles of the working class and social inequality to the effects of the 12 September 1980 military coup and personal dramas. His first film, Endişe (1974), won six awards at the Antalya Film Festival, including Best Film and Best Director. Gören gained international acclaim with Yol, scripted by Yılmaz Güney and directed by Gören himself. The film won the Palme d’Or at the 1982 Cannes Film Festival, marking a milestone in Turkish cinema. Other notable works include Derman (1983), Kurbağalar / The Frogs (1985), and On Kadın / Ten Women (1987). His final film, Ay Büyürken Uyuyamam, which he also wrote, was completed in 2011. Şerif Gören passed away on 8 December 2024 at the age of 80.
